SCARABAEIDAE
Aphodiinae
Aphodiini.
Leach 1815

X
Type genus. Aphodius Illiger 1798: 15.

Diagnosis. Elytra with basal margin not bordered. Femora not grooved at front or hind margin. Middle and hind tibiae with two or more transverse carinae. Pygidium smooth, unmodified. Metatibial apical spurs set apart. Metatarsal insertion set somewhat intermediately; tarsus can articulate between spurs.

Classification status. Worldwide, the classification of genus-level taxa (genera and subgenera) has been under much discussion. Few cladistic analyses have been published, and none are meaningful on a worldwide basis. Much work remains to be undertaken, using both morphological and molecular data, before any classification of genus-level taxa can be settled upon. In order to present the most information with the fewest evolutionary implications, all generic-level taxa are present as full genera.

Much work has recently been accomplished or is underway on the New World Aphodiini fauna. Gordon and Skelley (2007) reviewed the fauna of the US and Canada, Smith and Skelley (2007) reviewed member found in southern South America, and M. Dellacasa et al. (multiple works) are continuing to revise the Mexican, Central and South American taxa.

Distribution. Aphodiini are found worldwide, with a surprising paucity in South America.

Composition. Worldwide, there are approximately 170 genera and over 2000 species in the Tribe Aphodiini. In the New World there are presently 72 genera and 349 species recognized.
