Type species. Ataenius socialis Horn 1871, by original designation.

 
Diagnosis. Body length 4.2-5.1 mm, elongate-oval, somewhat flattened, reddish-brown, glossy. Head short, broad (broader in male), moderately convex. Pronotum nearly circular in shape, with lateral fringe of setae. Male with elongate curved protibial spur and 1-2 lateral teeth; female with protibial spur straight and 3 lateral teeth. Mesotarsi longer than tibia. Mesosternum not carinate. Abdominal fluting weak to absent.
 
 
 
 
 
 
Distribution. Eastern North America.
