Distribution: All of the species occur in South America, and Bothynus complanus Burmeister reaches Honduras.

 
 

Composition: 25 species (Martínez 1983; Endrödi 1985a).

 

Diagnosis: Bothynus species are distinguished by the presence of tridentate mandibles extending laterally beyond the clypeus, clypeus strongly contracted to a bidentate apex, nearly smooth elytra, quadridentate protibiae, and pronotum with a subapical tubercle followed by a large fovea.

 
 
 
 
 

Larvae: there has been nothing published on the immature stages or biology of any of the species.
